Because some of us have been believing we’re behind for the past few months.

Or possibly since we were old enough to compare ourselves to someone else.

Some of us still believe that once the inbox is empty we’ll finally relax.

That’s adorable.

Some of us believe everyone else has some secret map for adulthood that was accidentally withheld from us.

No evidence.

Remarkable commitment.

Here’s what I’ve noticed.

We spend a lot of time trying to believe in ourselves.

Very little time questioning the stories we’ve already believed for years.

The story that says success has to look a certain way.
The story that says if we’re tired we should simply become more efficient.
The story that says we’ll finally feel like ourselves after the next milestone.

Don’t stop believin’.
Hold on to that feelin’.

I love this version. Teddy Swims carries something in his voice that makes this song feel less like an anthem and more like a conversation. Like someone who actually means it sitting across from you.

And what I hear when I listen to it now is not a call to believe harder.

It is a reminder to believe more carefully.

Because the women I know are not lacking belief. They are extraordinarily good at believing.

In other people’s timelines.
In everyone else’s certainty.
In the opinion of someone they met five minutes ago...
over the truth they have been carrying in their own chest for years.

What they have stopped believing in is themselves.

Maybe recognition doesn’t begin with believing more.

Less of what was never true.

And more of what has always been.

Not every lie sounds dramatic.

We imagine lies arriving with villain music and a flashing warning sign. Something obvious enough to catch. Something loud enough to question.

The ones that do the most damage are considerably quieter.

I’m too late.
I’m too much.
I’m not enough.
I’m fine.

That last one especially.

We repeat them so often that eventually they stop sounding like lies.

They start sounding responsible.

We promote them to management. Give them a title. Let them run entire departments of our lives.

And then we wonder why nothing feels like ours anymore.

There are things we have known about ourselves for years that we have been very politely pretending not to notice.

The relationship we keep calling complicated.
The business that still works but no longer feels like ours.
The calendar full of commitments we quietly resent.
The answer we already know but keep hoping will become more convenient.

We are not missing it.

We are just very practiced at being comfortable with our own fiction.

Tell me lies. Tell me sweet little lies.

Every time I hear this chorus I notice something.

It does not sound like someone who does not know the truth.

It sounds like someone asking for just a little more time before she has to live it.

I understand that more than I would like to admit.

Recognition is often the moment we realize the lie was never as comfortable as we told ourselves it was.

It was just familiar.

And familiar...

is a very convincing substitute for true.

It isn’t about learning something new.
It isn’t about creating a better version of yourself.
It’s about noticing what has been true all along.

There is a particular kind of exhaustion that comes from living as though you are already behind.

Behind where you should be. Behind who you thought you would become by now. Behind the version of your life you designed on a vision board in 2019 that is still judging you from the closet.

Most of us picked up that feeling so gradually we cannot remember a time without it.

Somewhere along the way someone handed us a schedule.

Graduate. Build. Achieve. Arrive. Become.

We accepted it without reading the fine print.

We did not ask who wrote it.

We did not ask if it was meant for us.

We just... started running.

And we have been remarkably committed to that decision ever since.

We optimize. We compare. We create five year plans for lives we have not decided if we actually want. We calculate how far behind we are and then immediately make a spreadsheet about it.

I admire the efficiency. Truly.

Slow down, you crazy child.

I have heard this song more times than I can count. And that line finds me differently every time.

Not as criticism.

As relief.

Because the truth is — life was never a race. There is no finish line. There is no panel of judges reviewing your timeline and deducting points for the detours.

There is just your life. Unfolding exactly as it is. Right now. In this moment.

The schedule was never real.

The deadline was never assigned.

And the woman you thought you were supposed to be by now?

She was always just a guess.

Life has never been late.

Neither are you.

This isn't about finding the right answer.

“I think I’ve lost myself.”

I’ve said it.

My friends have said it.

I’ve watched women whisper it across coffee tables and admit it through tears.

It’s become so common that we’ve stopped questioning it.

We’ve accepted it as truth.

But the more women I’ve listened to...

the less I believe it.

I don’t think women lose themselves.

I think they adapt.

There’s a difference.

A profound one.

Because if you’ve lost something...the only option is to go looking for it.

But if something has been covered...the work isn’t searching.

It’s uncovering . That distinction changes everything.

I don’t believe we wake up one morning and suddenly become someone else.

I think it happens gradually.

One expectation at a time.

One disappointment.

One relationship.

One promotion.

One criticism.

One role we learned to play because it kept us safe.

Eventually...

adaptation becomes so familiar that it begins to feel like personality.

The woman who always says yes.

The woman who never asks for help.

The woman who keeps everyone happy.

The woman who never rests.

The woman who always appears strong.

People begin describing her as though that’s simply who she is.

Responsible.

Reliable.

Selfless.

Easygoing.

Capable.

She hears those words often enough that she begins believing them too.

Not because they’re false.

Because they’re incomplete.

They’re descriptions of adaptation.

Not identity.

Adaptation is brilliant.

It deserves more respect than it usually receives.

It protects us.

It helps us navigate seasons we never imagined we’d have to walk through.

I don’t see adaptation as the enemy.

I see it as protection.

The problem begins when protection quietly becomes permanence.

When survival becomes identity.

When the version of ourselves that helped us through one season never receives permission to rest.

I wonder how many women are exhausted not because they’re broken...

but because they’re still carrying identities that were only meant to carry them for a little while.

The people-pleaser.

The perfectionist.

The peacemaker.

The overachiever.

The woman who learned that love was safest when she earned it.

None of those identities appeared by accident.

They were intelligent responses to real circumstances.

They helped.

Until they didn’t.

That’s why I no longer tell women to “find themselves.”

I don’t think she’s missing.

I think she’s waiting.

Patiently.

Beneath years of adaptation.

Beneath expectations.

Beneath performance.

Beneath everything she learned she had to become in order to feel safe.

The woman beneath adaptation isn’t louder.

She isn’t more impressive.

She isn’t a future version of you.

She’s simply the one who remained while adaptation did its work.

This is why recognition has become the center of my work.

Not reinvention.

Recognition.

Because recognition asks a completely different question.

Not, “Who do I need to become?”

But, “What has been true beneath all of this?”

I’ve watched women spend years trying to build better identities.

I’ve rarely watched them pause long enough to ask whether the identity they’re trying to improve was ever fully theirs to begin with.

I don’t believe your life begins the day you become someone new.

I believe it deepens the day you recognize the woman who has quietly been here all along.

The one beneath adaptation.

The one who never stopped belonging.

The one who didn’t need to be created.

Only remembered.

Maybe that’s why so many women say, “I miss me.”

Not because she’s gone.

Because they’ve been listening to adaptation for so long that they’ve forgotten the sound of their own voice.

Recognition doesn’t create that voice.

It simply becomes quiet enough to hear it again.
